Deeply connected to storytelling, blending the narratives from history with my memories and transforming them during art making is a continuous and ongoing inquiry. Aqal is a reimagined nomadic Somali hut which, traditionally, was built by women only. A tradition that is nearly lost living in modern times, I decided to embrace this notion of the hut not only as a physical structure but as a manifestation of philosophical and cultural ideals. The new act of building without traditionally being shown, or formal training, making sketches, or measurements connected me to a more instinctual process.
